Consideration sets and department stores

How does something get on your radar? Do you put it there? Is it a product of your environment or upbringing, something that you've never questioned until now? A consideration set is a list of options in front of you that you are willing to 'consider' as a viable solution to a need or problem. For example, if I'm hungry in the morning, my consideration set for breakfast consists of vanilla protein shakes, nuts and dried fruit and eggs. These are the things I am generally willing to consider as a solution to my morning hunger...

But what is your consideration set for life? What do you see as plausible solutions to your current needs (shelter, career, family, spiritual, etc.)?

Again I ask, how many of the options placed in front of your are by-product of your environment and up-bringing and how many have you intentionally sought out? This matters.

If you go into a department store with no idea of what to buy, the sales woman will bring you back anything. But if you are able to walk into that same store with a clear idea of what you want, now she can begin to work for you. Now you have power. You have the authority to say yes or no with confidence to what she shows you, because you know what you want. And that's priceless...

But here's the thing: to figure out what you want to tell the sales lady, you have to be willing to figure out what you like/don't like and what works. You have to be willing to search, try, fail and repeat to discover that you look horrendous in brown or that cotton t-shirts make you look fat...

Take 5 minutes today and draw your future. Then, with bullet points, write down how you see yourself arriving at that destination.

Now crumple that piece of paper up and say to yourself, "I'm not thinking big enough yet".  Challenge yourself to increase the stakes. Make the vision bigger, riskier, more exciting and innovative. If you feel butterflies in your stomach or a swell of enthusiasm, you're on the right path...

Now draw the future you would ask a Genie from a magic bottle for. That's the  type of"big" you should be working towards...

I've learned something very important in sales. It takes a similar amount of effort for a big or small sale. So why not go for the big one?
